How to choose a front and rear light for the city

Before buying, check where you'll mount the light, how often you remove it, and whether you ride on lit streets or darker stretches.

For riding on lit city streets, a rechargeable front light that comes off the handlebar quickly is convenient. For a short trip through the centre, a compact front and rear light is enough. If part of your route runs along an unlit path, you need a model designed to light the road surface, not just mark the bike's position.

First measure the free space on your handlebar. Our compact mount fits a 22–32 mm diameter and needs at least 35 mm of free space next to the brake lever. Check that the bell, cables, basket or phone mount aren't in the way.

The rear light is usually mounted on the seat post. The silicone mount in our range fits round posts 25–35 mm in diameter; an aero post or a saddle bag may need a different mounting spot. If your household has more than one bike, compare their handlebar and seat-post diameters first.

If you leave the bike in a public place, choose lights that come off without tools. Keep the charging cable at your desk or in a bag, and charge them before the indicator shows an empty battery.

Reflective details can help with visibility, but don't replace proper front and rear lights. If you're not sure a mount will fit, send a photo of the mounting spot or bring the bike at pickup.
